[SOLVED] Wireless constantly drops

I am using Ubuntu 9.04 along with a linksys wusb100 wireless adapter.
When I start ubuntu, the connection is fine up to about 5-10 minutes and then drops.
I attempt
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/networking restart
with no success, the only way I can reconnect (as far as I know, im fairly new to linux) is to reboot, and this solves the problem 1/4th of the time.

Hi,

Please run the script in the the second part of this thread:

Wireless Setup - Start Here

That script will provide us with some info, so we can try and help you. Post the info using Code Tags.

Bye the way, I see that you are using NDISwrapper. There is a kernel module in the 2.6.28-15-generic kernel for this wireless, named rt2870sta. Did you try it before you installed NDISwrapper? I don't see the rt2870sta driver loading, did you blacklist it?

I installed ndiswrapper per the instructions contained within the help index of Ubuntu, and forum posts, I checked the blacklist, and the driver is not blacklisted.
The current driver im using comes from the factory disk included with the adapter.

Thanks, again, for the info.

The one thing that I see is the low bit rate of the wireless:
Code:
wlan0 IEEE 802.11g ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz Access Point: Not-Associated
          Bit Rate:1 Mb/s Tx-Power:20 dBm Sensitivity=0/3
          RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
          Power Management:off
          Link Quality:0 Signal level:0 Noise level:0

You should be able to manually set it to a higher rate, and see if it improves any. I don't know what the upper limit is on this wireless, but 54 mb/s is typical for newer cards, so try this.
Code:
sudo iwconfig wlan0 rate 54M
Then check the rate again with the iwconfig command.

If that doesn't help, then I advise to use a different connection manager. The default Ubuntu connection manager is NetworkManager. I would install the Wicd connection manager, and uninstall NetworkManager (it should do it automatically).
Quote:
I installed ndiswrapper per the instructions contained within the help index of Ubuntu, and forum posts, I checked the blacklist, and the driver is not blacklisted.
The current driver im using comes from the factory disk included with the adapter.
The rt2870sta driver is a new driver, and most How-To's would have been written before the drivers release. I am surprised that it didn't automatically load when your card was detected. The driver is found in the staging section of the kernel, which is place new modules are put before complete acceptance. This may have something to do with why it didn't automatically load. If it did load, it would interfere with NDISwrapper and the wireless will stop working.

I checked, and your wireless is listed as being supported by the rt2870sta driver. If the problem persists, you may want to try it. To first see if the driver exists in your kernel, run this command.
Code:
modinfo rt2870sta
If it gives an output, it is present in your kernel. I found your card listed in that output (ID 1737:0070 Linksys):
Code:
alias: usb:v1737p0070d*dc*dsc*dp*ic*isc*ip*
I don't believe that you can switch drivers on the fly. You would need to blacklist ndiswrapper first, then reboot. Then manually load the rt2870sta module (if it still doesn't load automatically).

I changed the bit rate to 54M, and minutes later the connection was lost. I proceeded to uninstall NetworkManager, and install Wicd. I attempted to connect to my router and it came up with validating authentication..I looked this up and it seems to be connected to the driver.
I did
Code:
modinfo rt2870sta
and it came up with a list, I did not see my device 1737:0070 listed

I think that I have installed the rt2870sta driver that I downloaded from Ralink:

Ralink corp.

This is the driver source and must be compiled.

The reason I think that this is the driver that have is the location of the driver.
Code:
modinfo rt2870sta

As you can see, this isn't the staging driver that I referred to earlier. If you are interested in installing this driver, I will give more detailed instructions.

I posted some instructions on installing this driver, in another thread:

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/wir...tml#post724861

First, you need a few things installed:
Code:
sudo apt-get install linux-source kernel-headers-`uname -r` build-essential
