Wlan AR928X shows no wlan(imo right driver installed)
Hi alltogether,
today I installed openSuse 11.1 on my Asus X56T notebook. The notebook has a Atheros AR928X wireless network adapter which I use under windows without any problems. Now in linux I got a situation: First of all the AR928X used with the standard network manager does not find any wlan networks (under windows triple checked...the nets are there so in windows i can use them)
First of all I thought it would be some driver issue, but after switching from Network Manager to yast I saw that in the network configuration screen the wlan adaptor appeared with it's correct name, so I really do not know what I can do to get wlan. It is not possible to find any net in range (but it is proven by windows that there are more than 3 nets here..)
Here the results of the batch script from the sticky post:
Hello, the lspci output of the script is not showing anything. Run it manually, but including the complete path, and post the output.
Code:
/sbin/lspci
It does appear to be loading the correct module (ath9k). Did you configure the card in YaST? You need to configure it to use DHCP for the connection, and to use NetworkManager to manage the connection.
almost perfect....now I can get a Wlan to show but it is not the wlan I need. The Wlan I sould log in, has no security key. It just has a "Hidden" name which is "Nord" and access is restricted via MAC Filter. When I am in Windows there is no Problem, I type in the Name of the network and I am logged in.
In Linux it does not show the Network "Nord". I created it within the Network Manager but when I try to connect to it, it does not find the network (The network itself is running - checked with windows). So what am I doing wrong with this Network.
I also tried configuring the adapter via Yast by scanning the network, but it just finds one Network from neighbours and a network that has an ESSID formed by several signs (something like \\o--//o\\)
Have you any Idea what exactly can cause me not to find the network?
The fact that the connection is hidden is most likely the problem. Hiding it isn't really a good way to protect it, as you can easily find it with this command.
Code:
iwlist wlan0 scan
Try unhiding it.

Yeah I know that the hiding is not the safest way, but I am currently living in a dorm and they manage it via Hiding and MAC Filter...
I tried your iwlist... and it showed 3 nets, but 2 of the nets had ESSIDs like /oo\ooo\-oo//. (and I just could do this when logged in as root)
If you got any more ideas would be glad to trie them...
No it only showed the known networkt (which is from neighbour) and two other I cannot identify...they have a weired ESSID (which is the name if I am right xD). Something like /oo\ooo\-oo// . I never saw these two networks in when I search for nets in Windows. So maybe Linux finds my Network but gives it this weired name?!? But if this would be true how can I then join the net, everytime I trie to connect to this weired named network, it does not work.
Your original post of the output of my script was missing a lot of information. Maybe Suse doesn't like it. Try running these commands, and post the output.
Code:
/sbin/lspci -nn
Code:
/sbin/ifconfig
Code:
/sbin/iwconfig
You also may want to try the latest version of the wireless drivers. I don't think that there is an easy way to do this in Suse, but you could try the latest version of Ubuntu (9.10). Boot it as a Live CD, and test the wireless.
Unfortunately, I still don't have an answer for your problem.
After installing Suse, did you do a system update? This would require connecting to the internet with a wired connection. There may be important updates needed that "could" correct this problem.
Also, did you try my advice to try a different version of Linux (Ubuntu), in Live mode?
