Wireless on Fresh Installed Debian
Hello Everybody,
My motherboard has arrived and I am now trying to make the wireless of my Debian partition work. I tried the instructions I used when I got help from this forums but is somehow experiencing puzzling outputs since I am just running the same commands I used then.
May I ask for some guidance regarding my wireless please? I am posting the basics hereunder and also the current results of my outputs.

Debian removed the wl package from their repos just recently.
Here are new instructions to build the module.

The tar xvf ../hybrid-portsrc* bit is just saying look up one directory to find the tarball and extract. Just get the downloaded tar file into your working directory and extract, either from the command line with tar, or with a GUI archive manager, like fileroller in GNOME.

Hello,
Thank you!
I think I was doing fine until this error report. Could the "make" command that I failed to execute caused this?

Did the build-essential stuff (first step) successfully install? You listed the step, but make not being found indicates it isn't installed. That is the cause, since the module wasn't built, it can't be found.
Note the difference between su - and plain su. Su with a hyphen will move you from your current directory to /root. It is normally good practice to use the hyphen, but you don't always want to. When following directions, note which one they are using to get root.
- 11-09-2009 #7
I think so. When I executed the first step, it prompted me right back ready for the next command so I was thinking it was executed properly. At least I thought.
OK. I thought its always good to use su - I noticed that that's how Casper would make his instructions but now I understand better.
I recently learned how to include my user name in the sudoers list. Do you think I should just execute all commands that requires Super User using the "sudo"? Or just really be more observant in following directions regarding the use of su & su - to get root.
- 11-09-2009 #8Hmm, you should have seen output on updating the repos, downloading and installing the packages, so I don't think it did. Try it with apt-get instead.I think so. When I executed the first step, it prompted me right back ready for the next command so I was thinking it was executed properly. At least I thought.
Copy and paste that directly in so you know the syntax is right.Code:sudo apt-get update && apt-get install build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) wireless-tools
It's definitely fine to use sudo instead of su. Just note that the guide is assuming you are logged in as root for everything in between su and exit, so each line after their su will need to be prefaced with sudo. (And typing exit won't be necessary anymore.)
And this line will need to be changed.Change toCode:echo 'install wl /sbin/modprobe -qr b43 ssb; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install wl $CMDLINE_OPTS' >> /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf
Code:echo 'install wl /sbin/modprobe -qr b43 ssb; /sbin/modprobe --ignore-install wl $CMDLINE_OPTS' | sudo tee -a /etc/modprobe.d/local.conf

Hello,
Thanks. I will be doing that and give you a feedback asap. I am in the process of installing and updating my laptop so I am using another PC right now. BRB
I guess in a few hours.

Hi reed9,
I executed the following and was able to be successful (i hope) until the very last step as you may see in my outputs below. I will restart my machine and be be right back. By the way, I tried sudo but somehow it seems to really want me to operate as root. Here it is for your analysis please:
