Hi, thank you for the info.

I don't see any wireless present in the posted information. Can you give any information on the PC and/or wireless that you have? Is this a laptop with an internal wireless, or what is it?Paul

The machine is a Dell Latitude Laptop C610. The wireless card is a Orinoco Gold Card made by Proxim with a model no of 8420-WD.
The setup works well in Windows XP but I am failing with Debian.
Thanks
Tony

Well, it looks like this is a PCMCIA card, and it uses the orinoco_plx driver.
But I don't have an explanation as why it isn't showing up on the system. Check the output of this command for any info on it.
If you post that output, surround it with code tags, as it is quite large.Code:dmesg
Also, this appears to be only a wireless-B card. It is horribly out-dated, and cannot offer you a secure network connection. I would advise on purchasing a modern wireless-G card, and not waste too much time with this.Paul

Just wanted to say many thanks for your help. I had not appreciated that the card was so old and only handled b
Do you have a recommendation for a wifi pcmcia card or usb stick that works well with Linux ?
Thanks again much appreciated
Tony

As many posters will attest to, it is difficult to tell Linux compatibility from the outside of a wireless. Linux drivers are bases on the wireless chips that are used, and most manufacturers don't list them.
The only one that I have recently purchased is a rosewell from newegg.com. Rosewell is a Newegg house brand, and only available from Newegg.
Newegg.com - Rosewill RNX-EasyN1 IEEE 802.11b/g/n USB 2.0 Wireless-N 4.0 Dongle (1T1R) Up to 150Mbps Data Rates WPA/WPA2 (AES, 64,128-WEP with shared-key authentication) WPS PIN, PBC (Hardware WPS Button) QoS-WMM -
This may not work out-of-the-box on your 2.6.26 kernel, but you can always install the latest drivers.Paul
