Help please: wireless trouble using Mint 7
Hi, I have recently installed Linux Mint 7 Gloria on a new hard disk in my laptop as the old one failed and this is my first experience of Linux, so please go easy on me

Upon installation, Linux offered me the opportunity to install a driver for the wireless card. It gave me two options. The first didn't appear to be working, so I deactivated it (which has now disappeared from the list) and tried the second called 'Broadcom STA wireless driver' and this does not seem to be working either.
I presume that the device needs further configuration, as any attempt to set up the wireless internet comes up blank. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The broadcom STA driver is correct.
Can you describe what isn't working more specifically? Are you not seeing wireless networks?
What is the output ofDoesCode:dmesg | grep eth1
Show any networks?Code:sudo ifconfig eth1 up sudo iwlist eth1 scan

It looks like the ssb module could be causing some interference. It can be safely removed.
You can then permanently prevent it from loading, by adding it to the blacklist file. In the latest version of Ubuntu, I first had to gain root privileges this way:Code:sudo modprobe -r ssb
Then enter your password. After that, enter this command:Code:sudo -i
Code:echo blacklist ssb >> /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I have to admit I am not entirely sure what isn't working. Of course it is possible that I am getting something wrong whilst setting up the wireless connection. Under network connections I am only able to get as far as entering the SSID, setting the security to WPA & WPA2 Personal along with entering the security key (copy and pasted from the internal pages of the router through a wired connection) and ensuring that under IPv4 settings the method is set to automatic (dhcp) as well as enabling pairing on the router. After this I am lost as this is all I have needed when using windows.
Here are the requested outputs:
Code:dmesg | grep eth1 [ 130.105255] eth1: Broadcom BCM4312 802.11 Wireless Controller 5.10.79.10 [ 139.230898] eth1: no IPv6 routers present
The device is picking up my router in cell 01, so I imagine it's me not setting something up correctly? These outputs have been taken before the ssb module had been removed. I have since followed the instructions, but in the terminal there was no confirmation of removal or blacklisting so how can I check this? Either way, I still cannot get connected.Code:sudo ifconfig eth1 up sudo iwlist eth1 scan eth1 Scan completed : Cell 01 - Address: 00:19:7E:00:78:20 ESSID:"Livebox-B900" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.412 GHz (Channel 1) Quality:5/5 Signal level:-40 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Cell 02 - Address: 00:24:B2:9A:75:48 ESSID:"Bonez" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:4/5 Signal level:-64 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (1) : TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s Cell 03 - Address: 00:21:04:AA:95:4A ESSID:"BTHomeHub2-9HRC" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:5/5 Signal level:-56 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Cell 04 - Address: 0A:21:04:AA:95:4A ESSID:"BTFON" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:4/5 Signal level:-58 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm Encryption key:off Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Cell 05 - Address: 06:21:04:AA:95:4A ESSID:"BTOpenzone" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.437 GHz (Channel 6) Quality:4/5 Signal level:-58 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm Encryption key:off Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s 9 Mb/s; 12 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s; 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s 48 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s Cell 06 - Address: 00:22:6B:94:F2:BA ESSID:"Ann Home" Mode:Managed Frequency:2.462 GHz (Channel 11) Quality:4/5 Signal level:-66 dBm Noise level:-92 dBm IE: IEEE 802.11i/WPA2 Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK IE: Unknown: DD7E0050F204104A0001101044000102103B00010310470010138140001DD211B29FFFC67E816B4BFB102100074C696E6B73797310230006526F7574657210240007575254353447321042000C4353563031484241303333331054000800060050F204000110110011576972656C6573732D4720526F75746572100800020088 IE: WPA Version 1 Group Cipher : TKIP Pairwise Ciphers (2) : CCMP TKIP Authentication Suites (1) : PSK Encryption key:on Bit Rates:1 Mb/s; 2 Mb/s; 5.5 Mb/s; 11 Mb/s; 18 Mb/s 24 Mb/s; 36 Mb/s; 54 Mb/s; 6 Mb/s; 9 Mb/s 12 Mb/s; 48 Mb/s

Everything appears to be working fine, so I would guess the problem is either in your configuration or with NetworkManager.
Here is a guide to setting up network connections with NetworkManager.
If that is what you're doing and it isn't working, check the file /etc/network/interfaces and make sure there it looks like thisAny other interfaces should be removed or commented out.Code:auto lo iface lo inet loopback
Assuming the interfaces file is correct and you're setting up the connection correctly...well, I'm not sure, I don't use NetworkManager. I know it sometimes has troubles. Some people find wicd works better.
If you have a wired connection, doto install and try it.Code:sudo apt-get install wicd
EDIT: The ssb module can interfere, but in this case, I didn't see it listed with lsmod, so it already wasn't loading.

Thanks Reed9. I have intalled wicd and got it working quite easily. Your help is much appreciated
