    The keyboard shortcut key most likely won't work in Linux. Although there are some netbooks/laptops where there has been a module created to get the shortcut keys to work.

    As for the output for the rfkill state. This may not actually apply, because I don't see the rfkill module loading. An older version of that module had these option:

    0 -- means both software/hardware rf_kill are disabled;
    1 -- means software rf_kill is enable;
    2 -- means hardware rf_kill is enable;
    3 -- means both software/hardware rf_kill are enabled

    Anyway, try changing it to 1 with this command:
    Code:
    sudo echo 1 > /sys/class/rfkill/rfkill0/state
    I have always needed to then reboot, to restore the wireless. So now reboot, and see if the wireless works.

    More on the rfkill thingy.

    I found this documentation on it:
    Linux Kernel Documentation :: rfkill.txt

    Additionally, each rfkill device is registered in sysfs and there has the
    following attributes:

    name: Name assigned by driver to this key (interface or driver name).
    type: Driver type string ("wlan", "bluetooth", etc).
    persistent: Whether the soft blocked state is initialised from
    non-volatile storage at startup.
    state: Current state of the transmitter
    0: RFKILL_STATE_SOFT_BLOCKED
    transmitter is turned off by software
    1: RFKILL_STATE_UNBLOCKED
    transmitter is (potentially) active
    2: RFKILL_STATE_HARD_BLOCKED
    transmitter is forced off by something outside of
    the driver's control.
    This file is deprecated because it can only properly show
    three of the four possible states, soft-and-hard-blocked is
    missing.
    claim: 0: Kernel handles events
    This file is deprecated because there no longer is a way to
    claim just control over a single rfkill instance.
    It seems that your wireless is forced off, or hard blocked. I hope that manually forcing it on overcomes this.

    It says permission denied.

    There have been a few commands that says "You should run this as super-user." When I installed, it asked for a setup password, and that works on a few commands that ask for sudo password.

    Is there a way to log on as super user, or should that have been set up from the beginning?

    Are you saying that when using sudo, and then after you enter the password, it still says "permission denied"?

    You can "login as root" with this command:
    Code:
    sudo -i
    After giving the password, you no longer need to precede the commands with sudo.

    If wicd says "No wireless networks found," does that mean that it's looking properly, but just not finding anything? Could there be any settings on the router that I should be looking at? Or could the problem still be with the device, driver, or enabling of the device?

    There's an iPod and another Windows computer right next to me that still have no trouble connecting.

    What was the outcome of changing the rfkill state?

    I rebooted and still no wireless.

    That I might learn to fish rather than just be given fish (which I appreciate), maybe we could break it down?

    1) You need a device (the b43, right?)
    2) You need a driver for the device (I think our thread verifies that I installed it)
    3) You need the device enabled (Was this the rfkill/rfkill0 command?)
    4) You need the device to have permission do do what it does
    5) You need something for the device to act on (wireless signal, which I have)

    am I summarising this right?

    After you manually changed the rkill state to 0, and rebooted, what is the reported state of rfkill? Did it take?

    b43 is the driver module. the device would be a Broadcom 4318.
    2) You need a driver for the device (I think our thread verifies that I installed it)
    See above.
    3) You need the device enabled (Was this the rfkill/rfkill0 command?)
    Yes, but there are other things that can enable/disable a device.
    4) You need the device to have permission do do what it does
    This usually isn't a problem.
    5) You need something for the device to act on (wireless signal, which I have)
    Hidden networks are hard to connect to in Linux. There really isn't a lot of protection in hiding a network, as I can find it just by scanning.

    We haven't yet determined if it is working correctly. The system will put out messages as to what it is doing. It is here that we may find out what is wrong. To view these messages, use this command.
    Code:
    dmesg
    Post the entire output of this command. You will have to scroll back to get to the beginning.

    Sorry. Didn't trigger with me to run the command again. It's still 2 after reboot.

    Thanks, but unfortunately it only tells us that the wireless is disabled. We already knew that!

    Try unloading/reloading the module after you change the state to 1. Also, after you change the state, query it again to see if it did change to 1.

    To unload/reload the module:
    Code:
    sudo modprobe -r b43
    Code:
    sudo modprobe b43
    Also install wpa_supplicant, just in case it needs it to connect.
    Code:
    sudo apt-get install wpa_supplicant
    Please do not send Private Messages to me with requests for help. I will not reply.
