    Wireless help

    Hi all,

I am current using a HP laptop that has built in wireless however this is only a g standard and I need a N standard. I have got a PCI express card and the drivers for this have installed this but the wirless does not work.

I have turned the wirless off with the quicklaunch button do I need to disable it ?

or any other help would be nice thanks

Plug in your PCI express card and give us the output of
    Code:
    lspci -vnn
    lsmod
EDIT: Also, what distro are you using?

You missed the output of lspci. If it helps you can redirect the output to a text file to make it easier to deal with.

    Code:
    /sbin/lspci -vnn > lspci.txt
It will be created in your current working directory.

What do them commands do as finding the solution would be amazing. But understand how you found the solution would be even better.

    thanks

    lspci = list pci devices
lsmod = list loaded kernel modules

First step of troubleshooting is just to figure out exactly what hardware and drivers you are using.

    Your two wireless devices are

    Code:
02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation Device [14e4:4357] (rev 01)
            Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device [103c:145e]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
            Memory at da100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 3
Capabilities: [58] Vendor Specific Information <?>
Capabilities: [48] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit+ Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [d0] Express Endpoint, MSI 00
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting <?>
            Capabilities: [13c] Virtual Channel <?>
Capabilities: [160] Device Serial Number 17-c4-5d-ff-ff-fe-00-00
            Capabilities: [16c] Power Budgeting <?>
            Kernel driver in use: wl
            Kernel modules: wl

05:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Atheros Communications Inc. AR5008 Wireless Network Adapter [168c:0024] (rev 01)
            Subsystem: Belkin Device [1799:8071]
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 19
            Memory at d7100000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=64K]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2
Capabilities: [50] Message Signalled Interrupts: Mask- 64bit- Queue=0/0 Enable-
Capabilities: [60] Express Legacy Endpoint, MSI 00
            Capabilities: [90] MSI-X: Enable- Mask- TabSize=1
Capabilities: [100] Advanced Error Reporting <?>
            Capabilities: [140] Virtual Channel <?>
            Kernel driver in use: ath9k
            Kernel modules: ath_pci, ath9k
The broadcom is the built in card, the atheros is your pci express card.

I'm not aware of any conflict between drivers claiming to different devices. There is often conflict if you have multiple drivers for the same device loading. So far things look ok.

Let's look at your wireless interfaces. Can you post the output of
    Code:
    iwconfig
Are you using a network manager program or how are you setting up your network connection?

Ok. wlan0 should be your atheros interface.

    Does this show local networks?
    Code:
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

Well, it does seem to be working fine. When you said before that the wireless didn't work, can you describe more what you were doing or trying? What specifically wasn't working?
