For what it's worth, my atheros shows up as wlan0 also and not ath0. I'm using the ath5k driver though.

rodnower you may have better luck than I've had with ath5k as Mike has suggested. I found this for you. Try it and see. If not, there is a good madwifi instruction right below it.

I already try
modprobe ath_pci
and this not work, but I think that enabling NetworkManager service is good idea.
