You need to install the firmware for your card. Instructions can be found here. Post back if you need help or get confused with this part.

Thanks for the help guys. I went to the website in MikeTbob's post, ran the command
like it said and gotCode:sudo apt-get install b43-fwcutter
So I went down to the section titled "You are using the b43 driver with an LP-PHY card (e.g. BCM4312)Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
b43-fwcutter is already the newest version.
0 upgrades, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 0 not upgraded.
Follow these instructions if you are using the b43 driver from linux-2.6.32 and newer or compat-wireless-2.6, or from any current GIT tree, and have a device with a low-power PHY. "
I downloaded broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2 as posted in that section via http: //downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.178.10.4.tar.bz2 (cant post link below 15 posts) and when I try to manually extract the contents into /lib/firmware i get a "you dont have the right permissions" error.
Am I on the right track? I'm totally lost. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you!

You are on the right track, you need to use root or sudo to extract the file to /lib/firmware because that is a system area and normal users do not have permission to write in that directory.

Mike, thanks for the help. Do you know the sudo command in ubuntu to extract the file with super user access? (of course you do, care to share?
)
- 07-23-2010 #8
Should be
assuming wl_apsta.o is in the current working directory and b43-fwcutter is installed.Code:sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware wl_apsta.o

I ran this code:
and gotCode:sudo b43-fwcutter -w /lib/firmware/broadcom/linux wl_apsta.o
That is after I used the commandCannot open input file wl_apsta.o
to open a GUI with root access and extract the file into /lib/firmware.Code:sudo nautilus
I am determined to get this working! Thank you all for your help!

When I plug a CAT5 cable into the laptop, Ubuntu doesn't recognize it. What could be causing this?!
I started over with Ubuntu, installed b43-fwcutter and it installed but had an error since I dont have any network. I then followed the steps above for the network driver, and get through most of
until I get to the last line, then I getCode:export FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR="/lib/firmware" tar xjf broadcom-wl-4.150.10.4.tar.bz2 cd broadcom-wl-4.150.10.4/driver sudo b43-fwcutter -w "$FIRMWARE_INSTALL_DIR" wl_apsta.o
Sorry, the input file is either wrong or not supported by b43-fwcutter. This file has an unknown MD5sum bb8537e3204alea5903fe3e66b5e2763
