[SOLVED] What's a good distribution for browsing the web

    Hi,

I'm having a problem getting Firefox to Browse the web using Ubuntu. I have a wireless connection that seems to be working fine, but Firefox comes up with the can't find server message. Apparently it's a common problem. Over the past year, I've tried Ubuntu 8.04, 9.0, and 10.04, but no success.

Does anyone know of any Linux distribution that is known to be able to browse the web? I've got an old Dell Latitude CPx, 750 Mhz, 512 MB that works great with Firefox and Windows XP, if that makes any difference. I'd really like to switch over to Linux. Thank you much!

    Jim

All distros should be capable of web browsing if the required packages are installed and configured properly. Any of the top 5 or 6 distros listed at DistroWatch.com should work fine for you. I'm currently using Arch and have been browsing the web with it for about 6 years if you should want to try it.

    Hi Oz,

Thank you much for replying so quickly. I'll take a look at Arch, but I know and like Ubuntu, so I'd like to get it going if I could. I've tried all the fixes that I've found in the forum for my particular problem, but none of them seem to work. The fix most mentioned is to turn off the ipv6 Proxy.

You mentioned installing packages. Do you know which ones I'd need? Can I download them somehow with Windows, and then install them on a Linux system using a flash drive? Thanks a lot for your help!

    Jim

This sounds more like it is a problem with the wireless. Can you access the internet with a wired LAN connection?

Read the Wireless Setup stickied thread at the top of the Wireless section. Post the information that it tells you how to find.
Please do not send Private Messages to me with requests for help. I will not reply.

    Hi OZ,
I just took a look at Arch. It looks a little too involved for me. I'm a somewhat experienced novice with Linux. I've done some command lines, but I don't know the language, if there is one. I think I need a distro that's more graphics oriented. Do you know of any of those that don't have the Firefox problem? Thanks again.

    OK Waterhead,

That sticky thread of yours looks informative.

I have no access to a wired connection. I'm using a RaLink USB wifi device. I'm not sure what the model number is, but if you need it, I might be able to find it.

I cut a heck of a lot of stuff out of the "dmesg" results. There was a lot of stuff on PCI, which I think is the PCI slot for a wifi card. But I'm using a USB card, so I figured it wasn't relevant. I also cut out most of the USB stuff. I still have it all in a file, if you need it. I've been working on this all day in the library parking lot in the sun. I think I'll bail for today, but I'll check for a reply in the morning. Thanks a lot for looking at all this.

Thank you for the information, but it seems to be incomplete. Please don't edit it, and post it complete. Let us decide what is relevent.

There is no wireless device listed, nor are there any driver modules loaded for a wireless device. Yet it is asking for the rt2870 firmware. How is this possible? Did you have the wireless inserted the entire time? Please insert it before boot, and leave it in the entire time.

If possible, run the wireless script that is in the second part of the stickied thread. Post the output of that script here. I believe your wireless problems are driver related, and can be corrected.

Results from all tests, including 2nd part of sticky

    Hi Paul,

I re-ran all the scripts, making sure that the wifi adapter was plugged in and that it was connected. I also ran the Wireless Setup script from the second part of the sticky.

I neglected to mention before, that the wifi adapter appears to be connecting to the router. The little circle on the top toolbar spins, but it stops in about 60 seconds or less, and say's it's been disconnected. I had this same system hooked up to another router, and it stayed connected, but Firefox still didn't work.

I also forgot to mention that I'm running Ubuntu 9.0.

When I ran the #dmesg# script, the terminal didn't have enough space to hold all the text. If you need the other text, let me know how to get around that problem, I'll re-run the script, and send you the results. Thanks again for your help. It will be great if I can get this thing working.

Ubuntu is loading two drivers for the wireless:
    Code:
    ============ lsmod ============
    Module Size Used by
    rt2870sta 488820 0
    arc4 1660 2
    ecb 2524 2
    rt2800usb 37372 0
The rt2870sta is the better driver. You will first need to blacklist the rt2800usb driver, to keep it from loading at boot. Open the blacklist.conf file, to edit it.
    Code:
    gksu gedit /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
Add this line to the bottom of the file:
    Code:
    blacklist rt2800usb
Now reboot. The wireless should now work.

Thumbs up Problem finally solved after 1 year

Paul, you're a genius. I've been trying to get hooked up to the Internet for close to a year now, and finally, you've helped me do it. It's wonderful! The only problem I had was while trying to connect to Yahoo mail, I had to reset the SSL Protocol in Firefox; easily done using their help section. Thank you very much for all your help!

    Jim
