No Wifi with Debian
Changed from Ubuntu to Debian to fix a problem with the Video driver that made Blender not work. Wireless worked great under Ubuntu. Works great in Windows (dual boot) but right now it doesn't work on Debian. I could have sworn it once did. iwconfig did show the old network name (that of a hotel I was staying it.) It stopped working in the hotel. Now I'm trying to get it to work with my home network.
Here is the output of the wireless set up script. Sorry it is so long.

What does iwconfig say the name of your device is? Whatever it is, do you see access points when doing:
It may be your device is still looking for the hotel's access point and not the one you are trying to connect to. Look in the iwlist and find your AP's name and change iwconfig to reflect it. For example, if the AP's name is "Lajoie_one," you'd do:Code:iwlist {your device's name without brackets} scan
Or you could try:Code:iwconfig {your device's name without brackets} essid "Lajoie_one"
Code:iwconfig {your device's name without brackets} essid any

I've had issues with ath5k on eeepcs that seem similar to yours. ath5k is a fine driver but in two cases, I had to abandoned it and use madwifi. If you want to give that a try it's pretty easy to compile. Once compiled, you will need to take out ath5k first:
Then:Code:/sbin/modprobe -r ath5k
If no errors, do lsmod and see if it is present. If so, retry going through iwconfig.Code:/sbin/modprobe ath_pci

The first step unloaded the ath5k driver.
The second step returns and error: "FATAL: Module ath_pci not found."
Now I don't see wlan0 at all.

Were you able to get it compiled? Here is a more detailed instruction on how to get it compiled and installed on your system.
UserDocs/FirstTimeHowTo - madwifi-project.org - Trac
By the way, should you want ath5k again, simply do:
Code:/sbin/modprobe ath5k

I went to this website:at debian.org for the ath_pci - Debian Wiki.
That seemed to describe how to install ath_pci. I believed it because it had the two steps you included. I thought "hey! All I gotta do is these extra steps to get a MadWiFi ath_pci driver!"
WRONG!! Not only did it not install ath_pci, but it removed over 150 packages, including Gnome.
Ha. Ha. Stupid newbie killed his own system by following the steps given. "Put bullets in gun. Put gun to head. Pull trigger."
Won't trust them again.
Anyway, have most stuff reinstalled now.
I'll try this other MadWiFi website. Lets assume I butcher my system again; what would be a good linux compatible network USB drive? There has got to be a better way than this.

I tried to follow the instructions on the first time MadWiFi webpage.
Now, I don't think I have any MadWiFi installed, and I couldn't find a MadWiFi directory, so removing them was not an issue.
Entered the command
And got a nice ASCII error message screen that said:Code:# module-assistant auto-install madwifi-source
Installation of the madwifi-source source failed.
Ignoring this package. Maybe you need to add something to
sources.list, maybe the contrib and non-free archives.

Yeah!! Got ath_pci compiled and installed and used the modprobe command on it.
It didn't change a thing, though. Still doesn't work, same as before I think.

No errors when running modprobe? Do you see ath_pci when doing lsmod? If so, is ath0 listed when doing iwconfig? Do you see access points when doing:
If you still have essid configured for your home's device:Code:iwlist ath0 scan
Also, check /etc/resolv.conf and make sure nameserver lists your router's IP address or the DNS entries from your ISP.Code:ifconfig ath0 up
