Linux NOOB New install can't connect to the internet :(
Hi all,
Ok I just Installed Debian GNU Linux i386 on a 3GHz (intel iirc) desktop that I have. I didn't set it up myself and it's been several years since I've used it so I really don't know/remember all the details.
Fresh install linux is the only OS.
When I was installing, it asked me to set up a network something to do with DHCP and it failed but I figured I didn't need a Network to install it as i was installing from DVD so I skipped it. Well after a day or 2 of trial and error (formatting an HDD takes a while) I got it all installed and working. Now there is the little 2 computers Ikon in the upper right that I use to connect to the Internet on my Debian/TAILS flashdrive so I figured use that to connect to the internet the same as I would with the flashdrive OS but it doesn't see my network. So I MANUALLY typed in the name of the network and the password and hit connect but it just pops up a message saying disconnected.
Is the skipped DHCP thing in the install related to why I can't connect? if so how do I fix it.
and/or/in general... How do I teach this thing to see the internet???
Please know I am a Linux UBERNOOB! and know next to nothing about it and have only JUST started reading the manuals. Also I really never was too good with the networking alphabet soup... I really mostly did video editing... so I really need this Dumbed down as much as possible.
Thanx in advance
Cheers

Ok lets try this again I AM AN UBERNOOB!!!
How exactly do I run those commands and or script thingy... I found that message the first time I looked to try to solve the problem but I don't understand what it's asking me to do. And I don't know HOW to do what it's asking. I CAN be taught... just please expect at this point that I don't know how to or barely know how to do even the most BASIC things in this OS.

You need to open a "terminal" or "konsole". I've never used Debian but you will just have to check whatever menu you have to find it. If you are using the gnome Desktop, there should be an Applications tab. If not, there should be a menu in the lower left of your Desktop. When you find the terminal, just type the commands in from the page jayd112 linked to and post the output here.

HOLY CRAP!!! that's too much to type... copy paste FTW... good thing i know how to tell WIN to "open with"

wlan0 is your wireless interface. What are you using in Debian to connect to internet. I use Wicd in AntiX which is basically Debian Wheezy. What Desktop are you using Also. Gnome,KDE,XFCE.ICEWM,Fluxbox?
This part don't look good.
and your kernel is ancient162.317520] rt61pci 0000:02:0a.0: firmware: requesting rt2561s.bin
By Linux and Debian Standards. My uname -r (remember I am on Debian Testing)2.6.23-5-686
I think Debian Squeeze even is at 2.6.32 and that is current stable Debian. See. You are learning new stuff already.Code:@biker:~$ uname -r 2.6.38-7.dmz.2-liquorix-686

lol yeah this is debian squeeze the stable version... I DL it off their website last week or so. I don't care that it's ancient I can deal with that later I need Stability for learning and can take training wheels off once I learn my way around. for example what you just asked
"What are you using in Debian to connect to internet?"
umm it's not connecting to the internet that's the problem...
"I use Wicd in AntiX which is basically Debian Wheezy."
NO CLUE! what any of that really means.
"What Desktop are you using Also. Gnome,KDE,XFCE.ICEWM,Fluxbox?"
AH! that I know... am using GNOME
for now I need to at least get this thing working connected to the internet so i can start really screwing aroung with it and learning how to use it...
- 12-09-2011 #10Then you should be using Network Manager to connect. What shows when you left click on top r/h side of top taskbar where network manager applet sits.AH! that I know... am using GNOME
I mentioned the older kernel just because a newer kernel will probably give you out of the box wireless since later
kernels have more modules in them.
rt61pci - Debian Wiki
see what I mean. Now to jump through hoops because of your older kernel. Add this line to your /etc/apt/sources.list .Installation
The rt61pci driver is included in the mainline Linux kernel since version 2.6.24. It is included as a module in Debian kernel images.
Firmware is required to be installed prior to device operation:
Add a "non-free" component to /etc/apt/sources.list for your Debian version. For example:
Then follow steps 2 through 7 in the link I provided.Code:deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian squeeze main contrib non-free
My /etc/apt/sources.list as a example. (Do not use my repos inn Squeeze)
Code:@Biker:/mnt/sdb1/home/harry$ inxi -r Repos: Active apt sources in file: /etc/apt/sources.list deb http://ftp.us.debian.org/debian/ testing main contrib non-free deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main contrib non-freeLinux Registered User # 475019
