    Hi,

I am on Open SUSE 11.4 - sorry I dont know where to look for the kernel version.

Following the guide given in the closed thread regarding this matter herewith I reproduce what I got from the terminal. I really dont know what "tag" is. Anyway I hope you find the screen reproduction below useful in a way to help solve my wifi connection which has been lost - accidentally.

Let me take this opportunity to thank you in advance for looking into this issue for me and others like I am, who are NOT knowledgeable in this field. As I have posted elsewhere over this forum, I would like to learn the Open Source software so I can share with others later.

So it was working before and all of a sudden it stopped working? Did your system get a kernel update? Any reason you can think of for it to stop working?

Try posting the output of these commands as root or use sudo.

    Code:
    ifconfig wlan0 up
    Code:
    iwlist wlan0 scan

    Hi,
The wifi was working perfectly well until one day, I was out of the house and my grandson called to have the password for the notebook. Later that day when i was back in the house i discovered I couldnot get to the internet, The usual icon for connection at the bottom bar was simply 'gone'. He must have hit some keys accidentally to cause that connection to go haywire! And forces me to learn something about setting it up again!

I am still on 11.4 Open SUSE for the time being. Kernel update?? I guess until I upgrade to 12.2 I may NOT have any update to the kernel -- just guessing. Sorry for being so green in this respect!

Here is what I got from the terminal:

    " mhismail@netbook:~> ifconfig wlan0 up
Absolute path to 'ifconfig' is '/sbin/ifconfig', so running it may require superuser privileges (eg. root).
    mhismail@netbook:~> iwlist wlan0 scan

Looks to me like I will have to use the root password somewhere to get something meaningful from the terminal - right??

Yes, you need to use the root account or use the sudo command.

Is there a place on the terminal where I can type in the root password? Or is it some place else?? Pls bear with my level of knowledge (or no knowledge) of LINUX (and computer science in general)!

    Tbob meant

    Code:
    sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
then type in password, (nothing will show, it's a safety feature), then hit return/enter key

    Code:
    sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    that will giver you

    may require superuser privileges

Are you talking about the Network Manager icon? Something like this?

If that's the case, you should be able to right-click on your taskbar, and choose Add to Panel.
It might be labelled Notification Area or similar.

If that's not the case, then follow through with the above suggestions.

Or if your system doesn't use sudo, login as root.
    su -
    (press enter)
    (Enter Password, press enter)
Now every command you run will be as root, so be very careful.

Hi, again after a bit of break,
I am now on the cable connection - eth0. The wireless is still 'hiding' somewhere, and I dont know where! Thats the ugly part. I never thought it can be this sticky, after all, its my 7 yr old grandson who must have tripped on some keys or something, that made the wireless set up gone crazy.

Back to the issue again. I reproduce here the message from the terminal - after going through the responses by a few members. Thanks for your patience.

    mhismail@netbook:~> ifconfig wlan0 up
Absolute path to 'ifconfig' is '/sbin/ifconfig', so running it may require superuser privileges (eg. root).
    mhismail@netbook:~> iwlist wlan0 scan
Absolute path to 'iwlist' is '/usr/sbin/iwlist', so running it may require superuser privileges (eg. root).
    mhismail@netbook:~> sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
    root's password:
    sudo: ifconfig: command not found
    mhismail@netbook:~> sudo iwlist wlan0 scan
    sudo: iwlist: command not found
    mhismail@netbook:~>

I must say this again, all the above does not make any sense to me. But I dont mind it for as long as I can get my wireless to be up again.

What do I need to do next?

Did you try to right-click on the taskbar and choose Add to Panel?
