Built-in Wireless Not Working - HP Pavilion dv5000 Laptop
I was able to use a hardwire connection and an external usb wifi adapter to connect to the internet. But the issue is I want to use my external usb wifi adapter for my desktop computer and use the existing built-in wifi on my laptop. I am using Linux Mint 11 (Katya). I currently am running the OS off a CD with no codecs, so I believe this is demo mode since none of my settings are saved after each boot up.
I figured out that having my usb wifi adapter plugged in or my laptop being hard-lined prior to boot up, that I could get internet. If I plugged in an ethernet cable or usb wifi adapter after starting up in Linux, then I could not establish an internet connection. Anyways, that is a tangent. The main issue is connecting with the laptop's built-in wifi adapter.
I am a newbie of newbies. I just started playing around with Linux because I was getting tired with how slow my laptop was getting over the years. Every piece of hardware is original except for an identical, replaced LCD monitor and upgraded RAM (1GB -> 2GB).

Please keep in mind, I am brand new to Linux. Terminology will be fairly foreign. I have worked with Windows 3.1 and up but have not done a lot in MS DOS

Hello.
You need to go here and download the firmware for this device to work.
b43 - Linux Wireless
Be sure to select the correct version for your device.\ which appears to be:
Code:Network controller [0280]: Broadcom Corporation BCM4318 [AirForce 54g] 802.11a/b/g PCI Express Transceiver [14e4:4319]

Hello there.
Just an FYI to add.
In Windows, it's ipconfig. In Linux, ifconfig.Jay

Yeah, I definitely overlooked that. I'll update my post from above. Thank you
Edit: Nevermind, I could not edit my original post because I have less than 15 posts and I have urls mentioned somewhere within it.
ifconfig -a gives me

dmesg output can be a beast. Let's narrow it down to info regarding firmware:
Code:dmesg | grep firmware

I see two interfaces. Try this. Disable the working interface first
Then set the other interface, wlan0Code:sudo ifconfig wlan1 down
Code:sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid xxxxxxxxx
Code:sudo iwconfig wlan0 key xxxxxxxxx
Code:sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode managed
Code:sudo ip link set wlan0 up
You'll have to change essid to match your ESSID from the router and change key to whatever your encryption key is. If it doesn't work, either reboot or use these commands to restart wlan1. Post any errors you get.Code:sudo dhclient wlan0

Yes, you might be seeing two interfaces. I connected my external usb wifi adapter to my laptop prior to boot-up. It works but I would like to use the built-in wifi adapter on the laptop so that my desktop can use the external usb one. I'll go ahead and isolate the interfaces with the codes you posted. As far as dmesg | grep firmware, I have that posted in the original post.
