    Hotspot mode doesn't start

    Hi, on my laptop I have Linux Mint Debian with gnome-shell. The nm-applet permits me to select the hotspot mode with the wifi device.
    The problem is that I set the hotspot mode, the system start to configure, but doesn't terminate the operation and returns to the normal mode of the wifi device.
    Dmesg and iwevent don't show anything, i don't know what is the problem.
    I attach a file with the output of the required commands in the forum.
    Thanks for help.

    Howdy and Welcome from another Texan. Just a Linux using Biker here. No IT professional.

    Code:
    02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6235 [8086:088e] (rev 24)
    	Subsystem: Intel Corporation Centrino Advanced-N 6235 AGN [8086:4060]
    	Kernel driver in use: iwlwifi
    Everything looks pretty okey dokey to me. Intel wireless is actually pretty well supported in Linux. So no driver or firmware is your problem I think.
    Just thinking out loud here. Post

    Code:
    sudo rfkill list
    Some hardware/laptops have this funny little glitch when you install Linux.
    They turn off the wireless in bios after you install Linux.

    So for starters. Make sure wireless is enabled in bios also.

    Edit: Also. Is hardwire ethernet working OK and have you connected up that way also. Sometimes that is needed first also.

    Happy Trails, Rok

    Have you looked in /var/log/messages for error indicators? You do need to be root, or sudo to access the log files in /var/log.
    Sometimes, real fast is almost as good as real time.

    Rokytnji, I believe too that is not a driver or firmware problem.
    Code:
    $ sudo rfkill list
    0: asus-wlan: Wireless LAN
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    1: asus-bluetooth: Bluetooth
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    2: phy0: Wireless LAN
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    5: hci0: Bluetooth
    	Soft blocked: no
    	Hard blocked: no
    But I see now in the output of dmesg something that is perhaps new:

    Code:
    Mar 23 20:32:34 mith kernel: [ 495.992481] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: RF_KILL bit toggled to enable radio.

    Throw me a

    Code:
    mintwifi
    lets see what it says.

    when it get to pinging google. Just give me the whole readout.

    Maybe even a

    Code:
    dmesg grep iwlwifi
    might help here. This is strange to me. Thinking out loud I am starting to wonder if we need to diable ipv6 and use ipv4 maybe.
    Ususally Mint is just plug in and go with iwlwifi.

    I got called into the house. I am on my IBM T23 Laptop now eating.

    I guess being more comfy I can think straighter. Since you mentioned Mint Debian. I want you to make sure firmware is present. Because on my laptop I just booted.

    Code:
    # dmesg | tail
    [   34.112243] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
    [   34.729898] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready
    [   35.100246] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): wlan0: link is not ready
    [   39.598241] wlan0: authenticate with d8:6c:e9:5f:07:44
    [   39.612120] wlan0: send auth to d8:6c:e9:5f:07:44 (try 1/3)
    [   39.613963] wlan0: authenticated
    [   39.616387] wlan0: associate with d8:6c:e9:5f:07:44 (try 1/3)
    [   39.622392] wlan0: RX AssocResp from d8:6c:e9:5f:07:44 (capab=0x411 status=0 aid=3)
    [   39.623104] wlan0: associated
    [   39.623163] IPv6: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_CHANGE): wlan0: link becomes ready
    Ipv6 is not a problem for me so scratch that last comment in my last post.

    https://wiki.debian.org/iwlwifi

    Pay special attention to

    Non-free firmware is required, which can be provided by installing the firmware-iwlwifi package.
    So all I can figure. Being Mint Debian. The non-free part gets Debian upset and not included in a install. They require the user to install.
    I am not hip on Mint Debian edition to know if Mint said screw it and included the non-free firmware or not.

    https://packages.debian.org/search?k...rmware-iwlwifi

    You can find I hope which version of Debian you have in Mint with

    Code:
    inxi -Fxx
    and

    Code:
    harry@biker:~
    $ cat /etc/os-release
    PRETTY_NAME="Debian GNU/Linux 7 (wheezy)"
    NAME="Debian GNU/Linux"
    VERSION_ID="7"
    VERSION="7 (wheezy)"
    ID=debian
    ANSI_COLOR="1;31"
    HOME_URL="http://www.debian.org/"
    SUPPORT_URL="http://www.debian.org/support/"
    BUG_REPORT_URL="http://bugs.debian.org/"
    to know which firmware to download for your version of mint. On this IBM T23. I run

    Code:
    harry@biker:~
    $ inxi -S
    System: Host: biker Kernel: 3.7.10-antix.3-486-smp i686 (32 bit)
               Desktop: IceWM 1.3.7 Distro: antiX-13_386-full Luddite 01 June 2013
    Now back to lunch. See Ya.

    Edit. Crap. Just went over your uploaded text file. I better load it up here because it looks like dmesg | firmware said firmware is loaded but I aint sure. I need more eyes on this.

    Hi rokytnji, thanks for your attention. I apologize for my delay in posting but I was testing the machine, because I have found a workaround to configure an hotspot with my wifi device.
    But I believe that it should have to exist a batter way to work with the wifi device.
    So, here the informations that you ask for, if I have understood all:

    Code:
    mith@mith ~ $ sudo ifconfig -a
    lo        Link encap:Local Loopback
              inet addr:127.0.0.1  Mask:255.0.0.0

    The workaround was doing this:
    Code:
    $ sudo iwconfig wlan0 mode ad-hoc
    $ sudo iwconfig wlan0 essid test
    $ sudo iptables -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ppp0 -j MASQUERADE
    # echo 1 > /proc/sys/net/ipv4/ip_forward
    After I have done

    Code:
    $ nm-connection-editor
    and I have choosen the "test" connection, and I selected "connect automatically"
    Now when I choose with Network Manager the hotspot mode, it open a "mith" hotspot that doesn't work, but after it open automatically the test hotspot that works fine.
    Why doesn't the "mith" connection hotpsot work when Network Manager create it?
