I've done everything I know to do. Stumped.

I just installed Xubuntu 16.04.1 on my Dell Latitude D620 and am having trouble getting Xubuntu to detect the wireless card. First thing I did was click on the network link in the top right corner of the screen and add my wifi network (put in the SSID, chose security type, entered the wifi key). Made sure "automatically join network if in range" was selected. Was unable to connect to wifi. I then followed the instructions in Waterhead's stickied thread, ran his bash script, and got this:

    Code:

Missing firmware seems to be the culprit, yes? I went here wireless.kernel.org/en/users/Drivers/b43#devicefirmware]en:users:drivers:b43, as instructed to do under dmesg firmware, and found that my card's PCI-ID (14e4:4311) is supported. Following the instructions on that site, I ran the command sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer. The installation appeared to be successful, but I still can't connect to wifi. I ran
    Code:
    dmesg | grep firmware
again, and got exactly the same results as above. I'm still being told to go to that site and download the firmware.

btw, I had to take the h t t p out of the URLs above because I don't yet have 15 posts.

i'm sorry, but waterhead is long gone and the script is 8 years old, so please let's start again.

please provide all the information requested in this thread.

how were you even able to enter your SSID and password if your card is, presumably, not recognized?

OH MY GOD! What I did in my OP all but fixed the problem. When I booted up the laptop today, all the wifi networks in the area were visible. Looks like all I had to do to make the firmware update take effect was reboot. Did I just graduate from penguin preschool to penguin kindergarten? Did I, did I?

Xubuntu--at least the version of it that I'm running--allows you to enter info for a network whether or not the hardware to connect you to it is working. You click on the network icon (up and down arrow right next to each other) in the top right, click "edit connections..." and enter the info there. The system saves it regardless of whether the networking hardware is functional.
