Bizarre problem for noob

I have Mandriva 07 running on a desktop (all good) it has a ra link wireless card that connects to our internet access point.
Mandriva tells me I am connected to the wireless network.
I can ping the gateway, my laptop etc, I can even ping Google.com.
HOWEVER, when I fire up Firefox, it times out at any attempt to access any webpage.

Can anyone help please. It is probs something basic I have missed, but I am a bit gutted cos it, and linux will be useless to me if I can't get online with it.

Thanks
David

You probably need to set up your DNS. Are you using DHCP?
check /etc/resolv.conf
It should look similar to this.
; generated by /sbin/dhclient-script
search Belkin
nameserver 192.168.2.1

Not sure about the DNS problem : if you can ping google.com by name (and particularly if ping reports a different IP address every time you do) then DNS must be working. I'd be thinking about the proxy settings on firefox - maybe it is set to proxy when it shouldn't or v/v
You could try another browser, out of interest. How about trying links or lynx from the terminal you just successfully pinged from?

Thanks for the quick replies.

MikeTbob, all resolve.conf had in it was this

nameserver 192.168.1.1

cmcevoy

weirdly enough, Konqueror went straight to google.com and then to any other page I entered. Lynx returned....

Alert!: Unable to connect to remote host.
lynx: Can't access startfile http://mandrivalinux.com

Its all to weird. The settings for firefox seem to make no difference either.

At least I can get on via Konqueror now, though Mandriva control center / updates doesn't think the wireless is connected and can't see the websites!

Thanks for the help
