This knoppix 5.1.1 seems to be very good. I've almost got my monitor working with Linux by using a Knoppix Live CD (I can't remember if tis the latest version or not). If anyone who is reading this thread has moitor problems under Linux read this thread:

Soon I'll be able to get cracking on ndiswrapper. BTW Martin, you got an IM account? I also tried to install a Knoppix Live CD to my hard disk but I never got anywhere lol. I'll try on Monday after I do some IT coursework.

    All the best guys,

I just got my Linux-Magazine for this month and it includes Xandros 4. I'll install that over Kanotix on the laptop alongside SuSE and try compiling ndiswrapper on that. I'll only post if I have sucess, otherwise I'll keep trying other distros till I find one that works.

    Sorry Tim, no IM.

Okay, update; Xandros 4 comes with it's own wireless software, it's own drivers for the USB device, I can configure it but at present it not getting signal and crashes the desktop forcing me to do a control-alt-F4 to get a command-line login so I can reboot, even then I have to force a re-start.

    I'll keep woking on it.

    Status Update
    -----------------------------------------------------

I got Knoppix working on my PC and installed to my hard drive The monitors working fine now...I'm taking the configuration of it and using it with Ubuntu.

I also got some Windows 98 drivers for the Belkin Adaptor and I will try them out on Ubuntu and see if i can get it working. Hopefully I'll be writing my next post on my Linux partition with the Adaptor working!!!

    Thanks,
    Tim

P.s. Just because we are close to getting this to work (I hope) doesn't mean that you can't leave a reply - Its always nice to hear how fellow Linux buddies are getting along!

Tim, how many gigs did Knoppix 5.1.1 need? I've tried on 5.5 and 6.5 and it's not enough.

I can tell you how to make the adaptor work in Knoppix 5.1.1, I've done it sucessfully but not with older releases.

Xantros 4 looks like a dead end.

Well I only had a 2.8 Gb hard disk to use but I managed to put it. I had to configure the swap file to be reduced from 1GB to 500mb though so i had a little space to store drivers for the adaptor.

Only problem is that im getting heaps of SU errors and complaints. HAL apparantly isn't enabled (even though I used "hald --daemon=yes --verbose=yes" to try and get it started - as the SU of coarse)

Also, it refuses to recognise fat, fat32 and NTFS file systems which is absoluty amazing. Waow, finally we got a solution lol! Would you post it here when you get time?

    Very appreciative,
    Tim

Tim I'll get back to you in a few days, I've broken the MBR on the laptop and I have to fix that first.

While Martin is trying to fix his MBR would anyone like to explain how I can install ndiswrapper lol - yes I have read all the information about installing it but its just being stupid. I'm getting exactly the same errors as Martin on post 40 and 49. I'm currently using Ubuntu (the very latest stable version.)

As far as I can see yaST is only for SUSE. Anyone got any pointers?
