Struggling with Wireless

I literally just installed Ubuntu on my computer, so please when explaining things to me, take me for an idiot.

I read through the sticky, and to be honest, I got very, very lost. I just tried to install a Netgear adapter and that didn't work, I phoned the Netgear technical support line and they say that their products don't work with Linux. From what I made out in the sticky I mentioned earlier there are specialized drivers, is this so with Netgear? And where might I find them?

If not, could someone recommend me a decent PCI wireless card and the relevant driver I would need to run it? I'm sorry if I come across wanting to be spoon fed but would really like to get hooked up to the net and get stuck in with my Linux install.

Thanks for reading, and remember, I'm a Linux idiot, treat me like one!
