    laptop not connecting

My roommate has a laptop with a wireless card built in, who doesn't now-a-days? The problem is It connects to my network, but it can not register with the IP address, and has problems with HTTP.. I was told that he might have to buy a new wireless card. Before I tell him that I want to make sure that is the problem. It always gets a excellent signal strength, but I can not for the life of me get it to register with the IP address...I have not a clue what is wrong.
