when it is a cool temperature my wifi connects at 54mbps but when it's hot inside it seems to only connect at 5Mbps. Is wifi affected by heat?...

Air pressure conditions associated with temperature changes do have an affect on radio transmission so there might be something to it alright. Also consider that perhaps the extra heat might be affecting your router's CPU and causing it to run slowly...though I suspect the former might be more the culprit.
