FC6 and wireless
Hi all, brand new to Fedora, but keep to learn.
I just dual booted my laptop dv9007tx with Vista and Fedora 6. I want to get my onboard wireless working which is a 3945abc card.
I have been through hundreds of how to's that do nothing but point me to dodgy repos and get me to download files which dont end up working.
I have downloaded a couple of ieee80211 tar files and ipw3945 tar files. Attempting to follow the install notes, i have not gotten far.
I am not at my third hour and given up trying to install this alone.
my wired networking is fine ,as i am posting this from my laptop on Fedora.
I go through a wireless router which assigns my IP by static DHCP.
Any help would be mostly welcome.

How far have you gotten then? And what errors do you get where you can't go further?
For the commands with that has a '#' before them you will probably need root-permissions.Code:$ tar xzvf ipw3945-1.2.1.tgz $ cd ipw3945-1.2.1 $ make $ wget http://bughost.org/ipw3945/ucode/ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2.tgz . $ DIR=$(sed -ne "s:^FIRMWARE_DIR=\([^, ]*\).*:\1:p" /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent) $ tar xzvf ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2.tgz $ less ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2/LICENSE.ipw3945-ucode # cp ipw3945-ucode-1.14.2/ipw3945.ucode $DIR $ wget http://bughost.org/ipw3945/daemon/ipw3945d-1.7.22.tgz . $ tar xzvf ipw3945d-1.7.22.tgz $ less ipw3945d-1.7.22/LICENSE.ipw3945d # cp ipw3945d-1.7.22/x86/ipw3945d /sbin # ./load debug=0 # iwconfig eth0

For Fedora 7, this post in Fedora Forum FedoraForum.org - Intel Pro/Wireless 3945ABG helped me big time. I followed the post to step 4, went to system services and enabled NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatch, rebooted and was in wireless land. Flawless!

I tried what nalg0rath said to try first, but i stopped at the sed command
didnt know what to do from there.Code:sed: can't read /etc/hotplug/firmware.agent: No such file or directory
So after that failed i went to this link in my quote and tried one of the solutions posted, which was to install it through yum.
this is what i got
seems to have installed fine, however i have no idea what to do from now...Code:[mrwasabi@localhost ipw3945-linux-1.2.0]$ sudo yum install ipw3945-kmdl-1.2.0-18.2.fc6.at Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Parsing package install arguments No Match for argument: ipw3945-kmdl-1.2.0-18.2.fc6.at Nothing to do [mrwasabi@localhost ipw3945-linux-1.2.0]$ sudo yum install ipw3945 Loading "installonlyn" plugin Setting up Install Process Setting up repositories Reading repository metadata in from local files Parsing package install arguments Resolving Dependencies --> Populating transaction set with selected packages. You should be able to go into the networking tool and set up a new wireless connection from there.

k im almost there...
i can see my router, i have the network manager running and its giving me the option of either wired or wireless. when i select wireless it is asking me for the passkey which i type it.
Pauses for a few minutes and comes back asking me for the key again. Ive tried several times and cant seem to get it to connect. I know the key is correct because it is a copy and paste from the router to the network manager.
I have a 128bit WEP hex Open system key in the router and i make sure that those are the settings i set when i enter my key in the network manager.
Ill try disabling security for troubleshooting purposes but i would much rather run with security enabled.

Well i got it working.
For some reason disabling security did nothing. it still wouldnt lease me an IP address...
So i turned it back on because my neighbour thought this would be a good time to connect to my net (saw a mac address in there which i didnt recognise)
but this time i turned it on as a WEP 128 bit Ascii key as opposed to HEX.
Asked me for the key again as i attempted to connect and it worked. Dont know why or how but its working.

Well guys its happened again. I had it working for a split momnet and after a reboot its stopped.
it came back asking me for a keyring password, which for some reason i kept getting wrong, so i coulnt connect.
I removed all keyrings and started fresh, but now all i get in the network manager is my wired network and wireless. I click on wireless and it asks me for the security key which i enter correctly.
After a few moments of nothing, it asks me again to enter my security key... another few moments of nothing and the same thing.... then it fails and defaults to my wired network.
If i dont have wired plugged in then it just disconnects me all together.
ive changed the settings on the router to have no security, and it still asks me for a key. ive removed and setup the network several times. Dont know what could be causing this...
