ieee80211 installation problem

I've been trying to get my Intel Proset Wireless 3945abg card running for awhile now, and found the page to install the driver at ipw3945.sourceforge.net . I tried using the all-powerful urpmi to find all the stuff, but it looks like I'm gonna have to do it by hand... The first thing it wants me to do is install the ieee80211 subsystem. It says all you have to do is extract it, cd, and make, but after I make, I get the following error:
Code:
   [root@localhost ieee80211-1.2.17]# make
Checking in /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv for ieee80211 components...
find: /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build/: No such file or directory
grep: /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build//.config: No such file or directory
grep: /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build//include/linux/autoconf.h: No such file or directory
find: /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build/: No such file or directory
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build M=/home/shane/Desktop/ieee80211-1.2.17 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.17-5mdv/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2
[root@localhost ieee80211-1.2.17]#
It sounds to me like I'm missing a directory or something. Does anyone know what went wrong and how to fix it?

You need to install the kernel source/headers for your distribution.

Alright, I found the kernel source and got ieee80211 installed, and also got the ipw3945 driver working, except it doesn't work correctly. It finds my network, but has a red bar and won't let me connect to it. In Windows, the connection has full green bars and I can connect to it perfectly from the same spot in my house. Also, there is a small WiFi light below my screen that lights up when the Wifi is connected. In Windows, it is lit solidly all the time, but in Linux, it is blinking rapidly. What is going on?
