CentOS 5.3 and Intel 4965 AG

I've been screwing with this for some time now. I've read a million HowTos and tutorials, each one different. Nothing really seems to work.

Starting with the wireless router. It is a Linksys WRT54G that seems to work fine with my XP laptop. It is configured to run WPA/TKIP with a preshared key.

One of the tutorials said to install the firmware so I installed the iwl4965-firmware package from rpmforge. That part is done so I believe that the drivers are installed.

All the other howtos are kind of vauge.

You may have installed some firmware, but it doesn't seem to be the correct one.

You can download this firmware from the Intel website:

Unpack it and copy the file iwlwifi-3945-2.ucode to the /lib/firmware folder.

Hal343: You shouldn't have deleted your post. I had the wrong firmware listed, but reading your post showed me my error!

Sorry about that. We were posting at the same time, and your instructions were clearer, so I deleted mine without checking to see if it was the same firmware.

Actually I believe the firmware is correct. Those messages were left around from before I installed it.

When you reboot, the messages are cleared. If you are still seeing the firmware error messages, then the firmware version is wrong. Are you still getting the errors?

There are no error messages after reboot.

And the wireless still doesn't work?

What are you using to connect to wireless networks? Does CentOS use NetworkManager? I would suggest using Wicd instead.

CentOS uses either NetworkManager or the regular network service. I prefer the regular network service because I have some custom scripts that load network configs depending on what network I am connected to at work. Wireless is prohibited at work and I need to make sure that the wireless radio is turned off there or get busted.

At home however it would be convenient to use wireless. I'll take a look at what you suggested.

If you are not using a connection manager, then you will need to use terminal commands. To enable the wireless, use this:

I am assuming that wlan0 is the name of the connection. To determine the names and state of network and wireless connections, use these commands.

If you are trying to connect to a WPA encrypted network, you will need to install and configure wpa_supplicant.
