Dell Inspiron 1525/ Fedora 9

As my username suggests, I am absolutely new at this. I purchased a new Dell Inspiron 1525 and installed Fedora 9 on it. (And was very proud of myself for getting even that far.)

I'm unable to get wireless access. I've tried to set it up with the Network Configuration tool, but I when I hit the "Activate" button I get this message: "/sbin/ifup: configuration for eth0 not found. Usage: ifup <device name>"

I have DSL service from Verizon, which works on my Mac (which is what I'm typing this on now). I have the ESSID and the WEP key for that.

The hardware on the Dell is Marvell 88E8040 PCI-E Fast Ethernet. The kernel version is 2.6.25-14.fc9.i686.

I'd add all the responses to the commands listed in the "Wireless Setup- Start Here" post but since I don't have Internet access on that computer I'd have to type them all in manually on the one I'm using.

Please help if you can! And please give very simple instructions if possible! Thanks.

And post the output of the commands here. If you are copying to a windows computer, rename them with the .txt extension. Windows can then open them.

You may need to download and install the Linux driver supplied by Marvell.

You have to unpack the driver. That can be done from a terminal by first changing the directory to where the downloaded file is, using the cd command.

It may actually look like this:

Then unpack it with this command.

It will create a folder called DriverInstall. The driver has installation instructions, in the README file. You will most likely need to install a few things before you can compile anything. You can use YUM to install these (as root).

Okay, I typed in all the commands you gave me in your post, and it looked like they were working because stuff was installing. But then I went to the "ReadMe" directions in the DriverInstall package and now I'm stuck. It seems as if the next step is to execute these two commands:

# cd DriverInstall
# ./install.sh

But both commands result in "No such file or directory"

Please help me figure out what to do next- thanks!

You need to find where the DriverInstall folder is. If you downloaded the file to your desktop, then that may be where it is.

That will take you to the Desktop folder. The ~/ means the home folder of whomever is logged in. Then list the contents of the Desktop folder.

Once you find the DriverInstall folder "cd" to it and then run the install.sh script.

Okay, I found the DriverInstall file- it was in the Documents folder. I changed to that directory and did the ./install.sh command.

You need to read and follow the README file that comes with the driver. I don't have a copy of the driver anymore, it took up too much space on my little Eee Pc. So I cn't advise on the instructions.

OK, I just downloaded and installed the driver on my desktop PC. No problems encountered. It is running a version of Debian. The first time In tried it, I didn't have root privileges, so it gave me this output.

I don't see why you should be having any problems with this. It does everything for you.
