difficulties connecting to network - ubuntu 10.04

hi, i'm having a fair amount of trouble trying to pinpoint where is the problem. I've read many pages but still don't know what to look for. please help!

My NetwokManager scans the networks around the house but when i try to connect to the one he's supposed to be connected to, it takes 5 min of "connecting" without getting a connection at the end. when i try to make changes from the desktop environment, the window is shaded and i get an error message.
