Linux Newbie Trying to connect wireless

Hmm. For some reason lspci, ifconfig, and iwconfig are not producing results. Try them as so

If that doesn't work, look at or post the output of

to find the full path of the commands.

Based on the kernel, you have an eee pc. Which model? You are running the original operating system on it? If so, wireless should work. Can you describe your problem more specifically?

Thanks for the reply. its an Asus Epc 4g (at lest that's what it say on the bottom panel. As for the output I don't know why it did that. I'd try the code you put up and get back to you.
Trying to sort it out for a friend. He bought it off someoneelse a while back. So I'm not sure if this is the original operating system.
But from what I have been told, the system recognises wireless networks but he doesn't know how to connect to the networks.

I just tried those commands. The system output was : bash: /sbin/lspci: No such file or directory

When i tried vhich lspci, the output was : bash: vhich: command not found.

Or am I trying these in the worng place ? This is the directory I am on: /home/user>

From what you've been told? Can you check? Does it see local networks? What happens when you try to connect to them?

It looks like enabling the advanced mode can cause the network manager icon in the system tray to disappear. Maybe that is the problem. More info at the beginning of this page: Enable Advanced Desktop Mode [EeeUser Eee PC Wiki]

I'm not clear what the friend has to do with it. The computer is in your possession, right? What happens when you try and connect to a network? What is the network you're trying to connect to? What sort of encryption does it use?

Nothing in your output indicates anything wrong so far. The card is there, drivers are loading.

The encryption is WEP. As for network, please clarify what you mean. I know the ISp is talktalk (formerly tiscali)

I expect he means any local networks. Generally, you will have an option to detect networks and it will show you any networks withing range of where you are. That is, locations with wireless access points. Do you have a wireless access point at the location you are working at? does your friend have one? are you trying to connect elsewhere?

The wireless access point would need to be setup and with WEP it should have an ESSID name and you will need that to connect. If you are near coffee shops, libraries or other places with WAP connections, they should be detected with whatever network connection you have.

Which operating system do you have?
