[SOLVED] Wireless Setup in My PCLinux OS

Hello Everybody,

I installed PCLinus 2009 in my laptop triple boot with XP/Fedora 11. I seem to have a problem in setting up the wireless which already works perfectly well in Fedora 11 & XP. I hope someone can help me analyze this. I tried to go to sticky first re wireless and this is as far I as went. As always, thanks in advance. :)

The system should be automatically loading the b43 driver module for it, but it isn't. You can try to manually load it, and see what happens.

Code:

sudo modprobe b43

If your system doesn't use sudo, then gain root permissions with the su command.

If it just goes to a new prompt after entering the command, then it loaded the module. Otherwise it should give an error. You then should check for the b43 module in the output of lsmod, it should be at the top of the list.

If the b43 module is loading, you then will need to install the firmware. You can copy the firmware from your Fedora install, if you know which file it is looking for. That can be determined with this command.

If PCLinuxOS doesn't give you anything useful, run this same command in Fedora. That should tell you which firmware file you need. In fact, there may be a folder that you can just copy. Look for this:

/lib/firmware/b43/

I run this command from my fedora and copied it to pclinux but I can't seem to get it right.

That is not a command, but a message from the system. It is also about Intel firmware, you want Broadcom firmware for your wireless.

If you can't determine the firmware to copy from Fedora, you may just want to manually install it. There are some instructions found here:

By the way Paul, I get this error message when I try to configure wireless manually.

Some packages (broadcom-wl) are required but aren't available. These packages can be found in Mandriva Linux One, Mandriva Linux Powerpack, or in the official non-free package repository.

The following component is missing: wl

The required files can also be installed from this URL:

You would use the wl driver if you had a "n" wireless. Since yours was listed as a "g" wireless, I thought that it would use the b43 driver.

It is now clear to me why the b43 driver was not loading. Your system wants you to use the wl driver, so maybe just install that instead.

I tried many ways of installing the wl driver but I can't seem to. I really wanted to install it myself so as to learn but I think its not getting me anywhere :(

I'm a little bit ashamed to ask but I guess the only way to learn correctly is to ask. May I request you to please share some instructions on how I am suppose to do it? :oops:

The PCLinux web site doesn't shed much light on this either. I did find that it uses apt to install programs, and the apt frontend Synaptic Package Manager. Open the Synaptic Package Manager and look for any programs called broadcom-wl. You may want to install all that you find! (possibly named dkms-broadcom-wl)

If it isn't there then you do need to enable a different repository. We'll cover that if you need it (meaning: I don't have a clue how to do it! :D )

I can't believe it. It was right under my nose. It was in the Synaptic Package Manager dkms-broadcom-wl. I stayed late last night and half of this morning trying to figure it out and you did it in 2 mins. I am using it now. Thank you for helping and most of all, thank you for your patience with greenhorns (ultragreen) like me. This has been another lesson on my part. I hope others can benefit from it. :))
