Success using Virgin wireless broadband (Speedtouch 780) with Linux
Just a quick note to say that I'm successfully using my new Virgin broadband connection (Speedtouch 780 router) wirelessly with Linux - on both my lappy and one of my desktops.
Some helpful tech details:
Laptop - Dell Latitude D600 with LinkSys WPC55AG card, running PCLinuxOS TR2, though it also worked perfectly on Vectorlinux 5.8 XFCE. Both combos work right out of the box, WEP working correctly. The PCLOS is slightly faster and slicker to start up the wireless connection - but only slightly.
Desktop - Dell Dimension 2400 with LinkSys WMP55AG PCI adapter, running Vectorlinux 5.8 XFCE. Very straightforward, WEP works correctly.
Both Vector and PCLOS have built-in support for these excellent LinkSys cards, which use the atheros chipset.
A little curiosity - in the Speedtouch control panel (accessed by going to http://192.168.1.254 in Firefox) both PCs are shown as "Unknown 00-11.."etc.
I changed the password for the router, which is a vital security precaution.
Finally a test on the GRC "Shields Up" site, and FULL green light pass both on common ports and the full all-port attack.
I'm relieved it's all running smoothly - thought it would be MUCH harder. The Speedtouch is a bit tough to figure out initially, so be patient. I had to reset it once after getting locked out while messing with the password lol...
Wireless Linux is HEAVEN :)
