I am going to post your uploaded text because it is a hassle opening everytime and looking at it.

Ah, no, I saw that tutorial on my searching but was looking for the rt2870, but if you think the rt2680 driver will work, I'll try that :)
-
Man I know I am tired. Guess you are to. Because I recommended the 2860 driver. Not the 2680. You made me check (bleary eyed)
-
Yeah, my mistake :) perhaps I should have bought something with an r2d2 chipset? Following the tutorial now, anyhow...
Also I'm using mousepad instead of gedit (I don't have it and don't know how to use it) will that make a difference, do I have to watch my character encoding or anything?
-
I don't use gedit. Leafpad, Mousepad,Geany is all I use. Should not matter when editing text files. At least not in my experience. Heck. Nano or Vim will work also. So don't sweat Mousepad.

Hi there, all seemed to go ok until step 5...
Code:
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 down
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo rmmod rt2860sta
ERROR: Module rt2860sta does not exist in /proc/modules
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo mv /lib/modules/2.6.32-28-generic/kernel/drivers/staging/rt2860/rt2860sta.ko rt2860sta.ko.dist
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo depmod -a
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo modprobe rt2860sta
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$ sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
wlan0: ERROR while getting interface flags: No such device
karl@ubuntu:~/2010_07_16_RT2860_Linux_STA_v2.4.0.0$
So I don't think it worked :(
What do you reckon?

After reading up on your wireless usb. Ubuntus Kernel 2.6.33 and above support your wireless usb out of the box. I wish I had known that earlier. Then Just doing a kernel upgrade would have fixed this. Water under the bridge though. sigh
Soooo. Try this in terminal
Code:
sudo mousepad /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf
The text editor mousepad will open the file blacklist.conf
Add the following line to the end ot the opened file.
Code:
blacklist rt2800usb
Save it and close. Reboot with USB wireless plugged in . Open Network manager in Xubuntu and tick box or whatever it uses to enable wireless. See if you connect.
This should have been done way back when you first posted. Supposedly Ubuntu 10.04 supports your USB out of the box. My bad as I was tired, and glancing at a text file instead of having it in open view like I posted earlier made me see the whole picture better. Next time when you need to post a long readout in the forum use the code tags instead of uploading text.
(I Know. You already figured that out in your later posts) We are going back to the beginning to get this sorted out. :D
Also. I also read wireless USB 2.0 you are using can be a bit flaky running in Ubuntu in a USB 1.1 port which your 390X has. You would have been better of getting a Linux compatible PCMCIA wireless card like THIS
