USB Wireless, Linksys WUSB100 just won't work with Ubuntu 9.10

Linksys WUSB100 not working with Ubuntu 9.10

Have tried almost everything suggested in this forum. Just can't get it to work. Here is the status:

1. I can see the SSID of my router and others around my home thru Ubuntu
2. I have disabled the security on wireless. This is tested thru other PC that also uses wireless.
3. It appears that RT2870STA (driver for the USB wireless card) is loaded
4. When I select my router from the list, it tries for about 20 seconds and then a message says something like "Wireless Network Disconnected"

I might be close. However, I am on the verge of giving up after trying nonstop for 8 hours. I am not sure what I should do next. One thing I didn't get to try is to add the chip info from lsusb into the header file. I just couldn't find the header file in the RT2870 folder.

I got it working. Started at 10 PM and now it is 7:00 AM. I will post more details when I wake up after some sleep :)

Solution

Alright folks, here is what worked for me and I believe will work for anyone who is having an USB device that uses RT2870 driver. Few things to note upfront:

1. There is no need to install any new package or driver. Ubuntu 9.10 has everything that is needed for Linksys WUSB100 to work.

2. Do not waste time in trying to work with NDISWRAPPER. It didn't help me.

3. In case you have been trying several things, I'd recommend that you re-install Ubuntu 9.10 so that you can have clean copy.

4. Disable all security password at the router to avoid getting stuck in WEP and WPA issues.

I believe the issue is that Ubuntu 9.10 has two such drivers loaded at startup that try to work with WUSB100 USB wireless card. This causes issues resulting in both of them failing. These two drivers are RT2870STA and RT2800USB. You can verify this by using lsmod command in the terminal.

You will need to blacklist one of the two drivers. For me, disabling RT2800USB worked. Just edit the /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf file by adding a line at the bottom:

Also, I changed all "lo" to "wlan0" in the /etc/network/interfaces file. However, I am not sure if this was necessary.

Save the file and restart the machine. You must be all set. I hope this helps and pardon me if I sound authoritative. After several hours of reading and trying, I guess I should be telling these with good level of confidence.

Sorry that I wasn't around to help you out. It looks like you did OK by yourself, though. You didn't need to change lo to wlan0. lo is the local connection, internal to the system. It is sometimes referred to as localhost, or with the IP address 127.0.0.1.

In a perfect world I would want everyone to use the rt2800usb driver, because it is the open source driver for this card. But it simply doesn't work! I don't have any way to direct people to the developers for input and help, so I just recommend using the proprietary Ralink drivers.

No go here, I have the wusb100 ver.2 and I have no change from blacklisting the mod mentioned above. Any other suggestions? -running ubuntu 9.10 32bit

You may not be able to post links, but you still can post exactly how you fixed it!

Also, remember that there are different versions of this device. Each version has different chips inside, and have different solutions to the problem.
